How to Delete Bookmarks on Chromebook

The same Chrome features apply, with a few Chromebook-specific details

Deleting bookmarks on a Chromebook works the same way as on any other computer running Chrome. The browser is identical. The main difference is what happens after: Chromebooks have limited file system access, which makes some recovery options harder if you delete something by mistake.

Before deleting bookmarks in bulk, back up your bookmarks first. Export them to an HTML file and save it to your Google Drive or Downloads folder. This gives you a safety net.

Delete a bookmark from the shelf (bookmarks bar)

The bookmarks bar on a Chromebook is called the shelf area for bookmarks. It sits below the address bar, just like on any other Chrome installation.

  1. Make sure the bookmarks bar is visible. If it is hidden, press Ctrl+Shift+B to show it.
  2. Right-click (two-finger tap on the touchpad) the bookmark you want to delete.
  3. Select Delete.

The bookmark disappears immediately. If you made a mistake, press Ctrl+Z right away to undo.

Delete bookmarks in Bookmark Manager

Bookmark Manager gives you the most control for deleting one or many bookmarks.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+O to open Bookmark Manager. (This is the keyboard shortcut on Chromebook. There is no Cmd+Option+B because Chromebooks do not have a Cmd key.)
  2. Navigate to the folder containing the bookmark.
  3. Right-click the bookmark and select Delete.

To delete multiple bookmarks at once:

  1. Hold Ctrl and click each bookmark you want to delete.
  2. Or click the first bookmark, then hold Shift and click the last one to select a range.
  3. Right-click any selected bookmark and choose Delete.

Try deleting one or two bookmarks first to confirm you are removing the right ones before selecting a larger batch.

For a detailed guide on multi-select deletion, see How to Delete Multiple Bookmarks at Once in Chrome.

Delete an entire folder

  1. Open Bookmark Manager with Ctrl+Shift+O.
  2. Right-click the folder in the sidebar or main panel.
  3. Select Delete.

This deletes the folder and every bookmark and subfolder inside it. There is no confirmation dialog. Open the folder first and review its contents before deleting.

The undo window

After deleting a bookmark, press Ctrl+Z immediately to undo. This works in Bookmark Manager and on the bookmarks bar.

Important limits:

  • Undo only works for the most recent delete. If you delete three bookmarks one by one, you need to press Ctrl+Z three times to undo all three.
  • Undo stops working once you navigate away from Bookmark Manager or close the tab.
  • After closing Chrome (or restarting the Chromebook), undo is gone.

There is no trash folder

Chrome does not have a recycle bin or trash folder for bookmarks. This is true on every platform, including Chromebooks. Once the undo window closes, deleted bookmarks cannot be recovered through Chrome itself.

Recovery is harder on Chromebook

On Windows, Mac, or Linux, Chrome keeps a Bookmarks.bak file in the profile folder that acts as a last-resort backup. You can rename it to restore your previous bookmarks.

On a Chromebook, this is more difficult. ChromeOS does not give you easy access to Chrome's internal profile files the way a traditional desktop OS does. The Bookmarks.bak file exists, but reaching it requires enabling Linux on your Chromebook and navigating the file system from the terminal.

For most Chromebook users, the practical recovery options are:

  • Chrome Sync. If you are signed in and Sync is on, your bookmarks are stored on Google's servers. But if you deleted bookmarks while Sync was active, the deletion has already synced. Sync does not have an "undelete" feature.
  • HTML backup file. If you exported your bookmarks before deleting, you can import the file back. This is why backing up before bulk deletion matters even more on Chromebook than on other platforms.

Deleting bookmarks synced across devices

If Chrome Sync is turned on, deleting a bookmark on your Chromebook deletes it on every device signed into the same Google account: your phone, your other computer, everywhere.

Before deleting, consider whether you only want to remove the bookmark from your Chromebook or from all your devices. If you want to keep the bookmark on other devices, turn off Sync before deleting. Go to chrome://settings/syncSetup and toggle Bookmarks off, delete what you want, then decide whether to turn Sync back on.

Tips for safe cleanup on Chromebook

  1. Export first. Open Bookmark Manager with Ctrl+Shift+O, click the three-dot menu, and select Export bookmarks. Save the file to Google Drive so it is backed up off the device.
  2. Start small. Delete a few bookmarks, then check that you removed the right ones before continuing.
  3. Check for duplicates. If you have duplicate bookmarks cluttering your library, use the duplicate removal guide instead of deleting them one by one.

Keeping bookmarks safe on Chromebook

Because recovery is limited on ChromeOS, prevention matters more. TrueBookmark works on Chromebooks (it is a Chrome extension) and keeps automatic versioned backups. If you accidentally delete something, you can restore it without hunting for backup files on the file system.

When TrueBookmark helps
