How to Delete Bookmarks in Chrome
Remove individual bookmarks or clean up in bulk, and know what you cannot undo
Deleting bookmarks in Chrome is straightforward, but Chrome does not have a trash folder for bookmarks. Once you close the browser, deleted bookmarks are gone for good. Knowing how the undo window works and when to back up first will save you from accidental losses.
Delete a bookmark from the bookmarks bar
Right-click the bookmark on the bookmarks bar and select Delete. The bookmark disappears immediately.
If the bookmark is inside a folder on the bar, click the folder to expand it, then right-click the bookmark and select Delete.
Delete a bookmark from any page
If you are on a page you have bookmarked, the star icon in the address bar will be filled in (blue). Click it, and a popup appears with the bookmark details. Click Remove at the bottom of the popup. The bookmark is deleted.
Delete bookmarks in Bookmark Manager
Bookmark Manager gives you the most control, especially for deleting multiple bookmarks at once.
- Open Bookmark Manager (
Ctrl+Shift+Oon Windows/Linux,Cmd+Option+Bon Mac). - Navigate to the folder containing the bookmark you want to delete.
- Right-click the bookmark and select Delete.
To delete multiple bookmarks at once:
- Hold
Ctrl(orCmdon Mac) and click each bookmark you want to delete. - Right-click any of the selected bookmarks.
- Select Delete.
You can also hold Shift to select a range. Click the first bookmark, then Shift+click the last one in the range. All
bookmarks between them will be selected.
Delete an entire folder
To delete a folder and everything inside it:
- Open Bookmark Manager.
- Right-click the folder in the left sidebar or in the main panel.
- Select Delete.
This deletes the folder and all bookmarks and subfolders inside it. There is no confirmation dialog. The folder and its contents are removed immediately.
Before deleting a folder, open it first and scan through the contents to make sure you recognize everything. Once you close Chrome, there is no way to get them back unless you have a backup.
The undo window
Chrome gives you a brief undo window after deleting bookmarks. Press Ctrl+Z (or Cmd+Z on Mac) immediately after
deleting to undo the deletion. This works in Bookmark Manager and on the bookmarks bar.
Important limits:
- The undo only works for the most recent delete action. If you delete three bookmarks one at a time, you can only undo the last one (unless you press undo three times in sequence).
- The undo disappears once you navigate away from Bookmark Manager or close the tab.
- After closing Chrome entirely, undo is no longer available.
There is no recycle bin
Chrome does not keep deleted bookmarks in a trash or recycle bin. This is the most important thing to understand about
bookmark deletion. Once the undo window closes, the only recovery options are the Bookmarks.bak file (which gets
overwritten on each Chrome restart) or a backup you made previously.
If you need to recover deleted bookmarks after closing Chrome, see How to Restore Bookmarks in Chrome.
Back up before bulk deletion
If you are about to delete a large number of bookmarks, folders, or restructure your library, create a backup first. A quick HTML export takes 30 seconds and gives you a safety net if you remove something you did not mean to.
This is especially important before:
- deleting entire folders
- removing duplicates across your library
- cleaning up after an import
- reorganizing your folder structure
A safer approach for large cleanups
For a handful of bookmarks, right-click and delete is fine. For larger cleanup jobs, manually deleting dozens or hundreds of bookmarks gets risky. It is easy to click the wrong one, and the undo window is unforgiving.
TrueBookmark keeps automatic backups before any changes, so if a cleanup goes wrong, you can restore to the exact state before you started. No need to remember to export first.
When TrueBookmark helps
Native Chrome steps are the fastest way to finish the task once. TrueBookmark is the better fit when you want Backup, Restore, Find, or Organize to stay reliable over time.
