How to Rename a Bookmark Folder in Chrome

Change a folder name from the bookmarks bar or the Bookmark Manager without moving or losing anything inside it

To rename a bookmark folder in Chrome, right-click it, choose Rename, type the new name, and press Enter. It works the same on the bookmarks bar and inside the Bookmark Manager, and it is completely safe: the bookmarks inside keep their URLs, their order, and their place in the tree. Only the label changes.

Rename a folder on the bookmarks bar

If the folder lives on the bar, this is the quickest route.

  1. Find the folder on the bookmarks bar. If the bar is hidden, press Ctrl+Shift+B (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+B (macOS) to show it.
  2. Right-click the folder.
  3. Choose Rename.
  4. Type the new name and press Enter.

The folder updates instantly, and its contents are untouched.

Rename a folder in the Bookmark Manager

The Bookmark Manager is the better place when the folder is nested or not on the bar.

  1. Open the Bookmark Manager with Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Option+B (macOS).
  2. In the left sidebar, locate the folder you want to rename. Expand parent folders if needed.
  3. Right-click the folder and choose Rename.
  4. Edit the name and press Enter.

You can also click the three-dot menu shown next to a folder in the main list and choose Edit, which opens a small dialog with the name field.

Why renaming is always safe

Renaming touches one thing: the folder's name. It does not move the folder, change any bookmark inside it, or alter the order of anything. That makes it a low-risk way to tidy up, unlike deleting or merging, which actually move data. If you are reworking a whole structure, renaming as you go is a good first pass before any moving. Our guide to organizing bookmarks in Chrome covers the moves that do shift data.

Folders you cannot rename

Three folders are built in and cannot be renamed:

  • Bookmarks bar
  • Other bookmarks
  • Mobile bookmarks

Chrome treats these as fixed containers, so right-clicking them will not offer a Rename option. Everything inside them can be renamed freely; only these three top-level names are locked. If a folder you created is missing the option, it is usually because you right-clicked one of these by mistake.

Rename several folders quickly

There is no batch-rename in Chrome, but you can move through a list fast:

  1. Open the Bookmark Manager and click into the area holding the folders.
  2. Right-click the first folder, choose Rename, edit, and press Enter.
  3. Repeat down the list.

A light naming convention makes the result easier to scan. For example, prefixing active folders with a number keeps them at the top when you later choose Sort by name from the three-dot menu.

When a name change is not the real problem

Renaming a folder is quick. If you find yourself renaming the same folders again and again, the deeper issue is usually that pages are hard to find no matter what the folders are called. A search-first approach sidesteps that: TrueBookmark finds any saved page by part of its title or URL, so the exact folder name matters less, and it keeps a backup before bigger reorganizations in case you want to step back. Frequently asked questions

How do I rename a bookmark folder in Chrome?

Right-click the folder, either on the bookmarks bar or in the Bookmark Manager, and choose Rename. Type the new name and press Enter. Nothing inside the folder moves or changes, so renaming is safe to do at any time.

Does renaming a folder affect the bookmarks inside it?

No. Renaming only changes the folder label. Every bookmark and subfolder stays in place with the same URLs and the same order. The only thing that changes is the name you see in the sidebar and on the bookmarks bar.

Why is there no Rename option on my folder?

The three built-in containers, the Bookmarks bar, Other bookmarks, and Mobile bookmarks, cannot be renamed because Chrome treats them as fixed. Any folder you created yourself can be renamed normally with a right-click.

Can I rename a folder in the Bookmark Manager instead of the bar?

Yes. Open the Bookmark Manager with Ctrl+Shift+O, right-click the folder in the left sidebar or in the main list, and choose Rename. You can also use the three-dot menu next to a folder and choose Edit.
