How to Delete a Bookmark Folder in Chrome
Remove a folder and everything inside it from the bookmarks bar or Bookmark Manager, and undo it if you slip
To delete a bookmark folder in Chrome, right-click it and choose Delete. The important thing to know before you do: deleting a folder also deletes every bookmark and subfolder inside it, and Chrome does not ask you to confirm. So move out anything worth keeping first, and know how to undo if you slip.
Delete a folder from the bookmarks bar
- Find the folder on the bookmarks bar. If the bar is hidden, press
Ctrl+Shift+B(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Shift+B(macOS). - Right-click the folder.
- Choose Delete.
The folder and its contents are gone immediately. There is no trash to fish them out of later, so the next section matters.
Delete a folder in the Bookmark Manager
The Bookmark Manager is the safer place to delete from, because you can see the contents before committing.
- Open the Bookmark Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+O(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Option+B(macOS). - In the left sidebar, click the folder so its contents show on the right. Glance through them.
- Right-click the folder in the sidebar and choose Delete, or click the three-dot menu next to it and choose Delete.
Seeing what is inside first is the simplest way to avoid deleting something you still want.
What happens to the bookmarks inside
Deleting a folder is a single action that takes everything with it:
- Every bookmark in the folder is removed.
- Every subfolder, and everything in those subfolders, is removed too.
- Chrome does not show a confirmation dialog.
So a folder delete is never just "remove this label." If you want to keep the folder's contents and only drop the folder itself, move the bookmarks out first.
Keep the contents, remove only the folder
- Open the folder in the Bookmark Manager.
- Click the first bookmark, then press
Ctrl+A(orCmd+A) to select all of them. - Drag the selection onto another folder in the left sidebar, or cut and paste them in.
- Once the folder is empty, right-click it and choose Delete.
Now the folder is gone and its bookmarks live somewhere else. This is also the approach for splitting one crowded folder into a couple of smaller ones.
Undo a deletion right away
If you delete the wrong folder, you can often get it back, but only immediately:
- Press
Ctrl+Z(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Z(macOS) in the Bookmark Manager to undo the most recent change.
This undo is shallow and tied to the current session, so it is a quick safety net, not a real backup. If the deletion happened a while ago or across a sync, see how to recover deleted bookmarks in Chrome for the deeper options.
Folders you cannot delete
Three folders are built in and have no Delete option:
- Bookmarks bar
- Other bookmarks
- Mobile bookmarks
You can empty them by removing their contents, but Chrome keeps the containers themselves. If a folder will not delete, check that you have not right-clicked one of these.
Delete with a safety net
A folder delete is fast and final, which is fine when you are sure and risky when you are not. Keeping sync on helps, but sync mirrors a deletion to your other devices rather than protecting you from it. Before any deletion or cleanup, TrueBookmark automatically saves a safety backup, so a folder you delete today can be restored from the exact state just before the delete, even days later. For a broader sweep through clutter, how to clean up bookmarks in Chrome pairs well with this.
Frequently asked questions
How do I delete a bookmark folder in Chrome?
Right-click the folder, on the bookmarks bar or in the Bookmark Manager, and choose Delete. The folder and everything inside it is removed in one step. If you only wanted to remove the folder, move the bookmarks out first.
Does deleting a folder delete the bookmarks inside it?
Yes. Deleting a folder removes the folder plus every bookmark and subfolder it contains. Chrome does not ask you to confirm, so move out anything you want to keep before you delete.
Can I undo deleting a bookmark folder?
If you act right away, yes. Press Ctrl+Z on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Z on macOS, in the Bookmark Manager to undo the most recent change. The undo is limited, so it is not a substitute for a backup or sync.
Why can I not delete the Other bookmarks folder?
The Bookmarks bar, Other bookmarks, and Mobile bookmarks folders are built in and cannot be deleted. You can empty them by removing their contents, but Chrome keeps the three containers themselves in place.
When TrueBookmark helps
Native Chrome steps are the fastest way to finish the task once. TrueBookmark is the better fit when you want Backup, Restore, Find, or Organize to stay reliable over time.
