How to Create a Bookmark Folder in Chrome
Make a new folder from the bookmarks bar or Bookmark Manager in a few clicks, then fill it with the pages you save
To create a bookmark folder in Chrome, right-click an empty spot on the bookmarks bar and choose Add folder, or open the Bookmark Manager and use its three-dot menu. Both take a few seconds. The only thing worth deciding first is where the folder should live, because a folder is created wherever you happen to be.
Create a folder on the bookmarks bar
This is the fastest method when you want the folder visible and one click away.
- Make sure the bookmarks bar is showing. If it is hidden, press
Ctrl+Shift+B(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Shift+B(macOS) to toggle it. - Right-click an empty area of the bookmarks bar.
- Choose Add folder.
- Type a name and press Enter.
The new folder appears on the bar, ready to hold bookmarks. If you do not see the bar at all, our guide to showing the bookmarks bar in Chrome covers the toggle in more detail.
Create a folder in the Bookmark Manager
The Bookmark Manager gives you the full folder tree, which is the better place to build a tidy structure.
- Open the Bookmark Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+O(Windows/Linux) orCmd+Option+B(macOS). - In the left sidebar, click the folder you want the new folder to live inside. Click Bookmarks bar for a top-level folder, or open another folder to nest it.
- Click the three-dot menu at the top right of the manager.
- Choose Add new folder.
- Type a name and press Enter.
Because the folder is created inside whatever is open, opening the parent first is what keeps your structure where you expect it.
Create a folder while saving a page
You do not have to plan ahead. You can make a folder at the moment you save something.
- On the page you want to keep, click the star icon at the right edge of the address bar.
- In the small dialog, open the Folder dropdown and choose Choose another folder.
- In the picker, click New folder, name it, and confirm.
- Click Done.
The page is saved straight into the folder you just made, which saves a trip to the Bookmark Manager.
Nest folders for deeper structure
Folders can hold other folders, which is useful once a single folder gets long. Open the parent folder in the Bookmark Manager sidebar first, then add a new folder as above and it lands inside. A shallow structure is usually easier to scan than a deep one, so most people are well served by one or two levels rather than five.
Move existing bookmarks into the folder
A new folder is empty until you fill it. Two reliable ways:
- Drag: In the Bookmark Manager, select one or more bookmarks on the right and drag them onto the folder in the left sidebar.
- Cut and paste: Right-click a selection, choose Cut, open the destination folder, right-click an empty area, and choose Paste.
To select several at once, click the first bookmark, then Ctrl-click (or Cmd-click) each one, or Shift-click to
grab a range.
A quick naming convention
Folder names sort alphabetically inside the Bookmark Manager when you choose Sort by name, so a small convention pays off later:
| Goal | Naming idea |
|---|---|
| Keep active projects on top | Prefix with 1 - , 2 - |
| Group by area | Work - , Home - |
| Park things to read | A single Read later folder |
When folders alone stop keeping up
Folders are the right tool for a few dozen bookmarks. Once a library grows into the hundreds across many nested folders, deciding where something belongs, and finding it again, gets slower. This is the point where a search-first tool helps: TrueBookmark lets you find any saved page by typing part of its title or URL, regardless of which folder it ended up in, and keeps a backup so a reshuffle is reversible. Frequently asked questions
How do I make a new bookmark folder in Chrome?
The quickest way is to right-click an empty spot on the bookmarks bar and choose Add folder. Type a name and press Enter. You can also open the Bookmark Manager with Ctrl+Shift+O, click the three-dot menu at the top right, and choose Add new folder.
Where do new bookmark folders get created in Chrome?
A folder is created wherever you are when you make it. Right-clicking the bookmarks bar puts it on the bar. In the Bookmark Manager, the folder lands inside whichever folder is open in the left sidebar, so open the parent folder first if you want it nested.
Can I create a folder while saving a bookmark?
Yes. When you click the star icon in the address bar to save a page, the small dialog has a Folder dropdown. Choose Choose another folder, and the picker that opens has a New folder button so you can create and save into a folder in one step.
How do I put bookmarks into a folder after I create it?
Open the Bookmark Manager, then drag bookmarks onto the folder in the left sidebar, or select several and cut and paste them in. You can also set the folder as the destination the next time you save a page with the star icon.
