Google Bookmarks vs Chrome Bookmarks Explained

"Google Bookmarks" and "Chrome bookmarks" sound like the same thing, but they are not. Google Bookmarks was a separate web service that Google shut down in 2021. Chrome bookmarks are the ones saved inside the Chrome browser and synced to your Google account. So when people say "my Google bookmarks" today, they almost always mean their Chrome bookmarks synced to their account.

What Google Bookmarks was

Google Bookmarks (at google.com/bookmarks) was a standalone service for saving and tagging links to your Google account, independent of any browser. It was never the same as the bookmarks in Chrome. Google discontinued it in 2021, so it is no longer a place your links can live. If an old guide tells you to visit google.com/bookmarks, that advice is out of date.

What Chrome bookmarks are

Chrome bookmarks are saved in the browser itself. Locally, they sit in a file named Bookmarks inside your Chrome profile folder — see where Chrome bookmarks are stored. When Chrome Sync is on, Chrome also copies them to your Google account so the same set shows up on every device where you are signed in.

"Saved in Google" usually means synced Chrome bookmarks

Because Chrome sync ties bookmarks to your Google account, it is easy to think of them as "Google bookmarks." Functionally that is fine — just know there is no separate Google service holding them. The account is where the synced copy lives; Chrome is where you create, view, and manage them.

Where your bookmarks actually are right now

• Sync on: in Chrome on this device, and mirrored to your Google account and your other signed-in devices.
• Sync off: only in Chrome on the one computer where you saved them, in the local Bookmarks file.
