How to Show the Bookmarks Bar in Firefox

Bring back the Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox with a keyboard shortcut or a quick menu toggle

Bookmarks BarBy TrueBookmark TeamPublished June 28, 2026

To show the Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox, press Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Shift+B on macOS. The toolbar appears just below the address bar with your saved sites on it. If you prefer a menu, right-click an empty part of the toolbar area and pick a visibility option. Both methods take a couple of seconds and stick across restarts.

Show the toolbar with the keyboard shortcut

The fastest way is the toggle shortcut:

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+B (Windows, Linux) or Cmd+Shift+B (macOS).
  3. The Bookmarks Toolbar appears below the address bar.

Pressing the same keys again hides it, so it is an easy on/off switch. When you turn the toolbar on this way, Firefox sets it to show on every page rather than only on the new tab page.

Show the toolbar from the right-click menu

If you would rather choose how the toolbar behaves, use the right-click menu:

  1. Right-click an empty area near the tabs or the address bar.
  2. Hover over Bookmarks Toolbar.
  3. Choose Always Show.

This is the most reliable route because it lets you set the exact behavior you want instead of just toggling.

Use the three visibility options

Firefox gives the Bookmarks Toolbar three modes. Pick the one that matches how you browse:

OptionWhat it does
Always ShowKeeps the toolbar visible on every page and every tab.
Never ShowHides the toolbar everywhere.
Only Show on New TabDisplays the toolbar only on the new tab page.

If your toolbar keeps vanishing on regular pages but appears on a new tab, it is set to Only Show on New Tab. Switch it to Always Show to keep it up all the time.

Show the toolbar from the View menu

You can also use the menu bar at the top of the window:

  1. Click View in the menu bar. On Windows, press Alt first if the menu bar is hidden.
  2. Open Toolbars.
  3. Select Bookmarks Toolbar, then choose your preferred visibility option.

This reaches the same settings as the right-click menu and is handy if you already keep the menu bar showing.

Add and arrange bookmarks on the toolbar

An empty toolbar is not much use, so fill it with the sites you open most:

  1. Open your Library with Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows, Linux) or Cmd+Shift+O (macOS).
  2. Drag a bookmark onto the toolbar, or drag the site icon from the address bar directly onto the bar.
  3. Drag items left or right to reorder them, and right-click any item to rename or remove it.

To save room, you can shorten or remove long names so more sites fit across the bar.

Keep your bookmarks safe across browsers

Firefox stores your toolbar layout in its own profile, separate from any other browser. If you later move to Chrome, you can export your Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file and bring them in. See how to export bookmarks from Firefox and how to import bookmarks into Chrome for the exact steps.

If Chrome is your main browser, TrueBookmark is a Chrome extension that backs up your bookmarks the moment you install it, lets you save a fresh backup in one click, and automatically takes a safety backup before any risky change, so a layout you spent time arranging is never one accidental change away from being gone and you can restore an earlier version. It does not run in Firefox, but it is worth knowing about once your bookmarks live in Chrome.

Frequently asked questions

What is the keyboard shortcut for the Firefox bookmarks toolbar?

Press Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows and Linux, or Cmd+Shift+B on macOS. The shortcut toggles the Bookmarks Toolbar on and off, and turning it on this way sets it to show on every page.

Why is my Firefox bookmarks toolbar only showing on the new tab page?

Firefox has three visibility modes for the toolbar - Always Show, Never Show, and Only Show on New Tab. If the bar appears only on the new tab page, it is set to that third mode. Right-click an empty part of the toolbar area, open Bookmarks Toolbar, and choose Always Show.

How do I add bookmarks to the Firefox toolbar?

With the toolbar visible, drag a bookmark from the Library or the address bar onto the toolbar, or right-click a bookmark and choose to add it to the Bookmarks Toolbar. You can also drag the padlock or site icon from the address bar straight onto the bar.

Does Firefox have a Bookmarks Toolbar on Mac and Windows?

Yes. The Bookmarks Toolbar works the same way on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Only the shortcut differs - Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows and Linux, and Cmd+Shift+B on macOS.
