How to Get Your Bookmarks Bar Back in Chrome
The fastest fix takes one keyboard shortcut, but here is what to check if that does not work
Your bookmarks are almost certainly still there. The bookmarks bar is just hidden. The fastest way to bring it back is a
keyboard shortcut: press Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows or Linux, or Cmd+Shift+B on Mac. If the bar reappears, you are
done. If it does not, work through the other causes below.
Fix 1: Toggle the bar with the keyboard shortcut
Press Ctrl+Shift+B (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+B (Mac).
The bookmarks bar should appear immediately below the address bar. This is a toggle, so pressing it again hides the bar. If you accidentally pressed this shortcut while typing, that is likely how the bar disappeared in the first place.
Fix 2: Use the Chrome menu
If the keyboard shortcut does not work for some reason:
- Click the three-dot menu in the top-right corner of Chrome.
- Hover over Bookmarks and lists.
- Click Show bookmarks bar.
A checkmark means the bar is visible. If there is no checkmark, clicking it will turn the bar on.
Fix 3: Check Chrome settings
Chrome has a setting that controls when the bar appears. It might be set to show only on new tabs.
- Go to
chrome://settings/appearancein your address bar. - Find Show bookmarks bar.
- Make sure it is set to Always, not New Tab page only or Never.
If it was set to New Tab page only, the bar appears on new tab pages but hides when you navigate to any website. This can feel like the bar is randomly disappearing.
For the full breakdown of these display options, see How to Show Bookmarks Bar in Chrome.
Fix 4: Check you are in the right Chrome profile
Each Chrome profile has its own bookmarks. If you are signed into a different profile, you will see that profile's bookmarks (or none at all).
- Look at the profile icon in the top-right corner of Chrome, next to the three-dot menu.
- Click it to see which profile is active.
- Switch to the correct profile if needed.
If you recently updated Chrome or your computer restarted, Chrome may have opened with a different profile than usual.
Fix 5: Check for Chrome policies (work or school computers)
On managed devices, an IT administrator can force the bookmarks bar off using a Chrome policy. You cannot override this.
To check:
- Type
chrome://policyin the address bar and press Enter. - Look for a policy called
BookmarkBarEnabled. - If it is set to
false, the bar is disabled by policy and you will need to contact your IT administrator.
The bar is showing but looks empty
If the bookmarks bar is visible but blank, your bookmarks still exist. They are just not in the "Bookmarks bar" folder.
- Open Bookmark Manager (
Ctrl+Shift+Oon Windows/Linux,Cmd+Option+Bon Mac). - Click Bookmarks bar in the left sidebar.
- Check if there are any bookmarks in that folder.
If the Bookmarks bar folder is empty but you can see bookmarks in other folders (like "Other bookmarks"), your bookmarks were moved at some point. Drag them back into the Bookmarks bar folder if you want them on the bar.

The bookmarks bar disappeared after a Chrome update
Chrome updates occasionally reset display settings. This is uncommon but it does happen. The fix is the same: press
Ctrl+Shift+B (or Cmd+Shift+B) or toggle it back on through the Chrome menu.
Your actual bookmark data is not affected by Chrome updates. The update only changed the bar visibility setting.
If you are worried that bookmarks themselves are missing (not just the bar), check the bookmarks disappeared guide for recovery steps.
Quick reference
| What to try | How |
|---|---|
| Toggle bookmarks bar | Ctrl+Shift+B (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+B (Mac) |
| Chrome menu toggle | Three-dot menu > Bookmarks and lists > Show bookmarks bar |
| Change display setting | chrome://settings/appearance > Show bookmarks bar > Always |
| Check active profile | Click profile icon in top-right corner |
| Check for policies | chrome://policy > look for BookmarkBarEnabled |
| Open Bookmark Manager | Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Option+B (Mac) |
Access bookmarks even when the bar is hidden
If you prefer to keep the bar hidden to save screen space, you can still access bookmarks quickly through Bookmark
Manager or the address bar. Type @bookmarks in Chrome's address bar (Chrome 108 or later) to search your bookmarks
directly without opening Bookmark Manager.
TrueBookmark's Quick Find popup gives you instant access to your full bookmark library from any tab, so you do not need the bar visible to find what you need.
When TrueBookmark helps
Native Chrome steps are the fastest way to finish the task once. TrueBookmark is the better fit when you want Backup, Restore, Find, or Organize to stay reliable over time.
