How to Export Chrome Bookmarks on Android

Chrome on Android does not have an export button. The app can save and sync bookmarks, but it cannot write them to an HTML file the way the desktop version can. To get a portable file, you route through your Google account and export either from Chrome on a computer or from Google Takeout. Both produce the standard HTML file that any browser can read.

Why there is no direct export on Android

The mobile app is built for saving and opening bookmarks, not for managing files. On Android phones there is no Bookmark Manager and no Export command. (Android tablets do have a bookmarks bar and Bookmarks Manager, but still no HTML export.) What the app does well is sync: anything you save on the phone can be copied to your Google account and read by Chrome on other devices. That sync is the bridge every export method below relies on.

Step 1 - turn on sync from your phone

1. Open the Chrome app on your Android phone.
2. Tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner.
3. Tap your profile picture and confirm you are signed in with the right Google account.
4. Open Settings, then the sync options, and make sure Bookmarks is included.

Give it a minute so the phone finishes uploading. After this, your bookmarks exist in your Google account, ready to pull down on a computer.

Step 2 - export from Chrome on a desktop

With sync done, the cleanest export comes from Chrome on a computer signed in to the same account:

1. Open Chrome on the desktop and sign in with the same Google account as your phone.
2. Open the Bookmark Manager with Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Option+B (macOS).
3. Click the three-dot menu in the top-right of the Bookmark Manager.
4. Choose Export bookmarks.
5. Pick a location and save the .html file.

Step 3 (no computer) - use Google Takeout

If you do not have a desktop handy, Google Takeout exports the same data from any browser, including the one on your phone:

1. Go to takeout.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
2. Tap Deselect all.
3. Scroll to Chrome and select it.
4. Optionally open the Chrome data list and leave only Bookmarks checked.
5. Create the export and download the ZIP.
6. Unzip it and find the file at Takeout/Chrome/Bookmarks.html.

That HTML file is interchangeable with a desktop export and imports into any browser.

Keeping it current
